12 Shopify SEO & AEO Apps: What 23,443 Merchant Reviews Tell Us

We studied 23,443 reviews across 12 Shopify SEO and AEO apps. Explore ratings, usage duration and recent feedback, with charts and downloadable source data.

Five stars tell you less than you think

You need a Shopify SEO app. You open the App Store. Almost every option looks good. The stars are high. The promises are broad. Several now promise to help with AI search, too.

So where do you start?

We studied 23,443 scraped reviews across 12 selected Shopify SEO and AEO apps. These are reviews, not 23,443 apps. The listings were collected on October 8–9, 2026. We kept the numbers, the extraction method and a dated download so you can check our work.

23,443reviews in the sample
95.5%gave five stars
39.2%showed minutes / hours of use

The main finding is simple: a high rating is evidence of a positive review. It is not evidence of better rankings or more AI citations. Many people reviewed an app early. Some praised support. Others left stars with no text at all.

This is a guide to reading that evidence. It is not a league table of the best Shopify SEO apps. We did not install these apps or test their impact on traffic. The sample is an editorial choice, not a census of the category. Read the method before using the numbers to make a decision.

95.5% of reviews in this Shopify SEO and AEO sample had five stars

Of the 23,443 reviews, 22,384 had five stars. Only 316 had one or two stars. The average was 4.91 out of five. A narrow band of high scores makes it hard to choose on stars alone.

What to take from this: The selected apps have more five-star reviews than the broader scraped database. That difference does not establish better SEO performance. The groups differ in app age, category and who chose to review.
Source: frozen October 2026 snapshot. Baseline: all 926,262 scraped reviews, not all Shopify merchants.

Our broader database contained 27,933 app records and 926,262 reviews. Five stars accounted for 91.5% of those reviews. Five app scrapes were incomplete, so this is a database baseline, not a claim that we captured every app and every review on Shopify.

For an agency, the useful question comes after the rating: what did the merchant value, and how long had they used the app? A good support experience matters. So does reliable schema. They are different reasons to buy.

39.2% of reviews displayed minutes or hours of app use

Across the sample, 9,197 reviews displayed usage of minutes or hours. Another 6,487 displayed days. Only 7,645 displayed months or years; 114 had an unknown or unclassified duration.

That is a lot of early feedback. It can tell you about installation or a first support exchange. It has limited value for judging a process that may take weeks to show a result.

The contrast within the AEO subset is sharp. Avada AEO had 328 of 392 reviews showing minutes or hours: 83.7%. IndexGPT had 38 of 144 in that group and another 38 showing months or years. Neither mix proves an app works or fails. It changes what the reviews can reasonably tell you.

What to take from this: SEOLab had the most reviews dated in this window; GPTLab had the second most despite a smaller lifetime total. This helps you find current feedback. It does not measure installs, revenue, growth or search impact.
Source: 1,452 reviews dated July 12–October 9, 2026. All bars share a zero baseline and a 468-review maximum. Edited dates may affect the window.

The window contains 1,452 reviews, including 14 with one or two stars. A small recent sample should not overturn years of evidence. Nor should a large lifetime total hide what merchants are saying now. Read both.

Review text can tell a different story from the stars

In this sample, 2,280 reviews—9.7%—had no text after trimming spaces. For GPTLab, the figure was 147 of 316, or 46.5%. Stars without text leave you with less to inspect.

We also counted literal English keywords. There were 6,927 reviews mentioning “support,” and 584 mentioning “traffic” or “ranking.” These flags are not a sentiment model or a count of successful outcomes. They miss other languages and phrasing; a mention can describe a complaint.

“Excellent Services and very helpful, had a full understanding of my needs.”

That is useful evidence of one merchant’s service experience. Thirteen minutes cannot establish lasting search gains.

“I haven't seen a increase in visibility since I updated my website. I have made updates and when I look at my website stats, there not much more happening.”

Here, five stars sit beside a report of no visible improvement. One review does not settle app performance. It does show why the text deserves a read.

“Helpful app for managing/ optimizing SEO, structured data and image size compression. Really great customer service!!”

This longer-use review names concrete tasks. Those are good things to check in a trial: the markup produced, the images changed and the help available when something breaks.

A one-star BOOSTER review described trouble adjusting SEO for different language markets after about three years of displayed use. Treat it as an attributed experience, not a verified defect. If your client sells across markets, test that exact workflow before buying.

Shopify AEO apps need evidence beyond ratings and llms.txt

SEO apps often automate visible jobs: metadata, image compression or JSON-LD. An AEO promise asks a harder question: will an AI system find the store and use it in an answer?

Reviews alone cannot answer that. Neither can the presence of a file. Google’s guidance for AI search features says ordinary SEO practices still apply. Pages must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet. Google says no new AI text files or special schema are required.

For ChatGPT search, OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot separately from GPTBot, its training crawler. Access for one does not imply access for the other. Check actual crawler rules and responses. Do not take “AI-ready” on an app listing as a substitute.

Historical reviews add another limit. Some apps have changed names or added AI features. A review left years ago cannot validate a feature shipped later. Our table uses current scraped names with historical review totals; it does not attribute those old ratings to current AEO tools.

Ask for the answer, the citation and the date. If a tool claims AI visibility, inspect the recorded question, platform, response and cited URL. Repeat a fixed set of relevant questions over time. One appearance is an observation, not a guaranteed position.

How to choose a Shopify SEO app without buying the promise

Start with a page and a problem. A bloated product image needs a different fix from conflicting schema. Neither is the same as a brand missing from AI answers.

  1. Record the baseline. Save the page HTML, current structured data, image weight and relevant Search Console data. For AI visibility, save a fixed question set and the answers you observe.
  2. Check ownership of each change. Find out whether your theme or another app already writes titles, canonicals or JSON-LD. Inspect the rendered page for duplicate or conflicting markup.
  3. Read reviews for your workflow. Look for language markets, bulk changes, theme compatibility and support. Compare recent text with longer-use feedback.
  4. Trial a limited change. Use a test theme or a small page set. Back up metadata. Inspect the result, including what happens after uninstalling.
  5. Measure the job you hired it to do. Report schema validity, page improvements and observed search results separately. Track leads and sales where you can. Keep an activity log so you know what changed.

A GPTLab reviewer put one step plainly: “Before running bulk optimization, back up your existing titles and meta descriptions.” Good advice, regardless of the app you choose.

Compare the full plan cost, not the first price

The dated listings show why a single price column can mislead. TinySEO had a “Free to install” pay-as-you-go option with optimization charges, plus $14, $23 and $49 monthly plans. Tapita’s Business plan listed $9.99 per month with Shopify-plan surcharges and additional credits. Ilana’s JSON-LD listed $399 per year, not per month.

Avada AEO and GPTLab were listed as free in this snapshot. That is not evidence of unlimited usage. Read current quotas, store-size limits and charge terms on the listing. The downloaded pricing records preserve the plan text as scraped; they are not a promise of today’s price.

Use the findings to start a better agency conversation

For an agency, “you need an AI app” is a weak diagnosis. “Your product page has conflicting markup” is a useful starting point. So is a recorded AI answer that cites a competitor for a question your client should answer well.

AI Page Ready separates page readiness from observed AI search visibility. Use the audit to find specific page issues, then review the recorded answers when assessing visibility. A branded report can help a prospect understand the work before a sales call. It does not replace testing the Shopify app or measuring its results.

Methodology, source data and how to cite this study

Published October 12, 2026. We analysed a frozen snapshot of scraped Shopify App Store reviews. The 12 selected app scrapes completed between October 8 and October 9, 2026. All 12 app scrapes were complete; their combined app review counts matched the 23,443 extracted review records.

How we selected and counted the sample

We chose an editorial sample spanning broad SEO utilities, image optimization, structured-data tools and three AEO-focused listings. This was a purposive selection made during research. It was not random, exhaustive or selected by a validated market ranking. See the table above and the stable app handles in the downloads for the exact cohort.

Each observation is one unique app-handle / review-ID pair. Ratings are integers from one to five. We calculate an app average as the sum of its review ratings divided by its extracted review count. Percentages use all reviews in the stated group, including blank-text reviews, and are rounded to one decimal place.

Usage labels containing minutes or hours form the first group; days the second; months or years the third. Missing or unmatched labels are unknown. These are displayed labels at collection time, not independently measured use. Blank text means NULL or empty after SQL trim removes surrounding spaces. Keyword flags use case-insensitive literal English matches; the SQL shows the exact rules.

The recent window is 90 days inclusive, ending on the latest review date in the cohort: July 12–October 9, 2026. We use the stored review date; an edited review may carry an updated date. There are 1,635 edited records in the full cohort. Recent volume is not an install or growth metric.

What this study cannot tell you

Reviewers select themselves. Removed reviews, scraper errors, changing listings and uneven app ages can affect the sample. We have not independently verified merchant claims, app performance or the completeness of Shopify’s review history. We did not measure rankings, traffic, sales or AI citations. Differences here are descriptive, not causal.

AI Page Ready sells audit software to agencies. This article is published by our team; it is not an independent product certification. We did not personally test or endorse the 12 apps. The review excerpts were chosen to illustrate different kinds of evidence and are not a representative sentiment sample.

Questions about Shopify SEO and AEO app reviews

What do 23,443 Shopify app reviews tell us about SEO and AEO?

In our October 2026 snapshot of 12 selected Shopify SEO and AEO apps, 95.5% of reviews had five stars. Yet 39.2% displayed usage of minutes or hours. These reviews describe merchant experiences; they do not establish gains in rankings, traffic or AI citations.

Which Shopify AEO apps were included in this study?

The three AEO-focused apps were Avada AEO SEO Optimizer LLMs, GPTLab: ChatGPT Claude AEO SEO, and IndexGPT: AI SEO for ChatGPT. They form a subset of the 12-app editorial sample, not an exhaustive list of Shopify AEO apps.

Does an llms.txt file guarantee visibility in AI search?

No. Google says its AI search features require no new AI text files or special schema. An llms.txt file is not proof that an AI system has indexed, recommended or cited a store. Check crawler access and measure actual answers separately.

How should an agency choose a Shopify SEO app?

Start with the store’s problem: image weight, metadata, structured data or AI discovery. Check the app’s permissions, full plan cost, recent review text and behaviour on a test page. Save a baseline, make a limited change and measure the result before applying it across the store.
